Foster Dog Sniffer School

We would like to thank the hard-working dog rescue groups in our community by offering a new program that will not only provide enrichment to dogs in foster care, but also help with their adoptions into great homes.

Introducing our new program:  Foster Dog Sniffer School

These will be weekly drop-in K9 Nose Work® classes FREE to dogs currently being fostered.

Some of the many benefits of K9 Nose Work® are:

  • Dogs easily burn lots of mental & physical energy doing searches

  • Searches can be done anywhere you can take your dog

  • No prior training is required and no obedience is needed

  • In classes, dogs work one at a time and rest crated or safely in a vehicle between searches; so reactive dogs can enjoy the activity, too

  • Shy or fearful dogs build confidence and overactive dogs put their energy into fun searches

  • Stronger bond between dog & handler as handler learns to observe, understand, and rely upon his dog

From our experience, we find that dog owners that wish to participate in K9 Nose Work® are people that want to bond with their dog, that want to enrich their dog’s life and are, quite honestly, much better overall dog owners than your typical dog owner.  Basically – these would be your best adopters!!

Training Methodology

Any dog can learn K9 Nose Work®. The training methodology is designed to help pet dogs tap into their hunting instinct, learn independent problem-solving skills, and to build broad and solid foundational scent detection skills that will enable them to successfully face new and greater challenges in K9 Nose Work®.

Throughout a dog & handler team’s training in K9 Nose Work®, the emphasis will always be on creating learning experiences for the dog and supporting his independent problem solving, not commanding him to perform a series of tasks in a predetermined manner. K9 Nose Work® is all about the dogs and all about celebrating their amazing abilities.

How can this make a dog more adoptable?  How about earning titles and pretty ribbons!?!

Through partnering with Cyber Scent Work, your foster dogs can earn titles and ribbons. Our instructors are CSW evaluators and can offer tests during class time, so that your foster dogs can earn titles and ribbon bling to take with them to their new homes.  Each rescue will have to register with Cyber Scent Work and submit their score sheets on-line to receive their certificates and ribbons.

More information on this program can be found here:  https://www.cyberscentwork.com/shelter-approval

And just a little about us.  We have been teaching Nose Work for over ten years.  All of our instructors are Certified Nose Work Instructors.  Several of our instructors also hold other certifications such as Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), Family Dog Mediator (FDM) and more!  You can read all of our bios here.

How does all of this work?

  • One person from each rescue must create an account profile with our registration software.

  • Any foster dog that comes to class should be in your profile.

  • Dogs should be up to date on all vaccinations and free of communicable illness or parasites when coming to a class.

  • Any human volunteer may attend class, but will need to sign a waiver.

  • Dogs must be registered for each class.  If the foster volunteer cannot make class (or dog is adopted – yay!), please let us know so that we may offer the space to another foster dog.

  • Your foster dog's information can then be transferred to an owner once adopted.  New owners will also receive a discount towards a future class.

  • Dog-reactive dogs are welcome as long as they can be managed by foster volunteer.  Human reactive dogs are not appropriate for class setting, but we can possibly work with the dog outside of class.  Please let us know in advance if the dog guards resources so that we can set them up for success.

We look forward to working together with the rescue community to adopt dogs to the best homes possible.
